Blog #1: Zoo keeper died in England (Minami)

Hello, this is Minami. I read a news story about "Zoo keeper killed by tiger" in the Guardian on 25 May: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/may/25/zoo-keeper-killed-in-tiger-attack

<Summary>
A zoo keeper was killed by a Sumatran tiger at South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Cumbria, England on 24 May.  The dead keeper is a 24-year-old woman named Sarah McClay.  Ms. McClay was attacked by a male tiger while she was looking after him.  However, there is a mystery about her behavior.  According to the animal park’s owner, David Gill, she went into the tiger’s enclosure, despite she was experienced in looking after big cats.  Mr. Gill said “there is no reason for why she did it” and “it was her fault.”

<My opinion and Question>
The reason why I chose this topic is that many accidents like this case had occurred repeatedly in the world, including Japan.  A lot of animal keepers were killed or injured by their animals until now.  I think that animal park owners and keepers need to be more careful and come up with new ways looking after their animals.  People, even professional keepers, do not know when animals begin to be hazardous being.  Therefore, to prevent people from being killed by animals, more strict rules should be devised.
What do you think about the current way of looking after animals in zoos?  Do you have any ideas about better ways?  If you would like to get more information about Sumatran tigers, watch this movie.

<Addition>

I'm sorry for my misunderstanding the article.  It seems that the woman tried to suicide.  Therefore, the above questions I gave are not related to this incident.  However, there are many accidents in zoos, so I would like you to give your opinions about the questions.

  1. This is Mayuko! I am so sorry for the zookeeper. However, animals behave following his instinct so no one can controls it. So even the professional zookeeper should be careful when they face animals that they are talking cafe of. That is the only way to look after animals in the zoo.

  2. Hello. This is Koichi.

    I was really surprused at this news because i heard that animals in zoos do not kill other animals. It means tje longer they stay in zoos, the less wild they become; however this isn't true, according to this article.

    The best way to look after animals is to try to understand 'everything' of them. To do that, the keepers should communicate with the animals, and it will make animals to recognize the keepers. They can be a kind of friend. I think this is good way to take care of animals in zoos.

  3. Hello, this is Eikou

    I also feel sorry for the zookeeper. They did not expect to be killed/injured by their animals at all. Actually, I think it is hard to breed animals the way zookeeper wants it to. In addition, I believe that safety is our first priority even for the zookeeper, so the principle of every single zoo should think about the better way breeding animals in the zoos
