Blog #1:Turkish police break up Istanbul park protest

Hi, I am Mayuko!

I read article about protest that happened in Turkey in Asahi Sinbun digital on May 31st , 2013.

*summery*
Riot police used tear gas and pressurised water to exclude protest at an Istanbul park on May 31st. The protesters claimed that the park should be protected from plans that include the construction of a shopping mall, which is one of development project by government for campaign to host olympics in 2020.  12 people -including a prominent journalist- were injured because of the protest. The protest continued until next morning.
At the same time, over thousand of people joined a protest against government and police in western city,Izmir and capital city,Ankara.
They aired grievances against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s Islamic-rooted government, which has been seen as displaying increasingly authoritarian and uncompromising tendencies in its third successive term in office.

Reason why I choose this article is that this topic is related to Olympic in 2020. Both Istanbul where the protest was happened and Tokyo are candidate city of Olympic 2020. Istanbul is very beautiful and interesting city comparing to other candidate cities  because Istanbul is located between western world and eastern world.  In addition, there is possibility that  Olympic be held in islamic world for the first time. However, as you can see in the article, there is negative aspect to held Olympic in Istanbul. It can be said that there are uncertainties in terms of security. I think that safety is the most significant thing to held Olympics. Host city must have responsibility for protect millions of people who come to watch wonderful performance by top athletes. On the other hand, Tokyo is the safest city in the world and it is the biggest appeal point.
So what do yo think that Tokyo's fear factor to held Olympics? Also, do you want to see Olympic 2020 in Tokyo?

  1. Hello. This is Koichi.

I think Tokyo is too crowded for foreign people. Even today, Tokyo has so many people. Therefore, if Olympic is held here, Tokyo would full of people. Because of that, transport system in Tokyo could have many troubles; however, I want to watch Olympic games in Tokyo because it is possible that I cannot have the opportunity to watch the game in the studium.

  2. I'm also interested in this news. Just a month ago, Tokyo Governer Inose criticized Turkey and it became a problem. This time, Istanbul has a problem. Probably Madrid has an advantage due to these two cases. Now, I move on to answering your questions. First, I worry about that transportation in Tokyo would be more crowded than that of present. It might bring disorder. Also, I don't hope that the Olympic would be held in Tokyo, because there is a possibility that suspicious persons come into Japan. So, I want to see the Olympic 2020 on TV the same as it was.

  3. Hi, I am Eikou.

I am very interested in holding Olympic Games in Turkey because as you mentioned in a summary, it would be the first time to hold it in an Islamic country if Turkey was chosen. Since Tokyo is too crowded and polluted, I do not want Tokyo to be a host country. Talking about the pollution, I felt Tokyo extremely polluted when I came back from Canberra, Australia, where I had lived for a year, about a year and a half ago. In addition to these, there are not many places where visitors stay in Tokyo when compared to Madrid, Spain.
