Blog #4: The comeback of a tradition - kaya (Koichi Saito)

A traditional thing which has made a comeback I choose is a kaya (蚊帳). This is an item that prevent us from mosquitoes. As kaya is made from a net, mosquitoes cannot go through it; therefore, we wouldn't be bitten by them. From this picture, we can know people in edo era used it as well.
In the old days, most of all houses in Japan had it. It was a kind of a symbol of summer in Japan. Without using a fun or an air conditioner, we can feel cool because the wind blow through the kaya. It has made a comeback especially in kindergartens in Japan. When children take naps, they entered it and sleep.
The reason why kaya is making a comeback is connected to the environmental problems, such as global warming. Using air conditioner needs lots of energy, and in order to produce the energy, CO2 is emitted. To stop this bad spiral, using "eco-item" is promoted by the government. I think this is the biggest reason why kindergartens started to use this production. Also, it's good for the children. In the kaya, the children can sleep well, a teacher said. It is a win-win solution for both the government and the kindergartens

I totally agree with this comeback. We don't rely on the electronic devices too much. The people in old ages were able to spend their life without them. They made efforts and invention in order to live more comfortably. We have to learn this way of thinking from them.

  1. Interesting! I didn't know about these products in Japan as I normally associate them with countries where there is a high risk of malaria. Don't people have screens on their windows? If so, they shouldn't need nets like these.

Could you please fix your spelling mistakes? You have many.

    1. Thank you for your kind advice. I fixed the mistakes.

You're right that we don't have to use kaya if there are nets on the window, but I think there must be nets on them, but kaya is used. I'm little confused why they are using kaya. I'll do some research.

By the way, I'm really interested in the productions which my group members pich up. Many of them are used in summers, such as funs or senses.

    2. Hi Koichi,
Thanks for your reply and for brushing up your spelling. I guess people want to be absolutely sure that they are not bothered by bugs when they sleep so even if they have screens on their windows, using kaya might help.
Thanks for taking interesting in your group members' posts!

  2. I didn't know the fact that kaya came back. I also think that its comeback is good thing. Although the cause of the comeback results from the environmental problems, it would also be a good chance to experience such an traditional life. A lot of Japanese haven't used kaya yet, so they would come to be interested in it.

  3. I knew that these products have been useful in foreign countries in African countries for the protection from malaria, so it was a little surprise for me to know the fact that they have comeback in Japan as well for ecological purposes. I totally agree with your opinion. I think it is good that we rediscover useful things which used in the past.

  4. Hi this is Mayuko. I have used Kaya when I went school trip to Numazu during summer vacation. I was really surprised that Kaya has comeback in Japan as an ecological thing. Kaya is easy to use for everyone so it is good idea that spreading Kaya to all over the world as new japanese product.

I heard the fact that kaya made a comeback for the firsttime. I think it is a good boom and we can save much more energy by using kaya and less electric devices.
