"MOOCS" type of study (Yuna Kahara)

Hello everyone. My name is Yuna Kahara. This is my first blog on my page.

I write an article about the way of giving lessons changes in most of universities except Japan. I read this article in Nihon Keizai newspaper on May 30, 2013.

Many universities in Europe and United States start to take the idea called “reversal class”. According to the idea, they use Internet mainly to gain knowledge and try to discuss hard in classroom. So lectures are not regarded as important in the class room.  Accessing to free courses has allowed students to obtain a level of education and it also enabled students to ask something unclear by commenting to the page. This type of education is called "MOOCS". The page also contains transparent explanation by some moving images.

Only one negative point of MOOCS is that student can’t get credit through taking class. But thinking it reduces time and fee to commute to school, that is not a big problem. I think Japan also have to introduce the system like MOOCS. In MOOCS, all classes are conducted in English. So we should study English hard because no translation system in it. The ultimate goal is to tell one’s idea to other students in English. It must lead to heated discussion in the classroom.
Some people think this style of study is ineffective. Because it is difficult to keep knowing about students who are being lazy. It seriously leads to the expansion of gap in study abilities.

I think we can deepen our understanding in class by using something like blog to communicate and exchange each person’s idea. So I really think this type of class is better.

Especially in university, what is the best way to give lessons do you think?

  1. I didn't know anythig about MOOCs, so I came to be interested in it. MOOCs is certainly a good way for university students, but I think that it will not necessarily be good for all students. Some students may want to study directly, not using internet. A good way to study English that I think is just discussing. Discussing will make us speak English actively and get various ideas. Especially, talking to teachers or students whose mother tongue are English in classes would be effective, I think.

  2. Hi, this is mayuko. Same as Minami, I had not know about MOOCs at all before I read this blog. As a college student, it is good opportunity to think about the way of educating at college. I think that Japanese student is not good at discussing compare to other countries student. Discussion skill is useful when we become a member of society.

I'm glad to know this information because I didn't know about MOOCs at all. I thought it's interesting, and I wondered why universitis in Japan don't introduce this system.

  4. Hello, I am Eikou

I did not know about the idea of MOOCS. I think this is a very interesting idea because you can get the information about what you are not clear at home. I agree with your thought that Japan should introduce something like this. I think even if you cannot get a credit for it, you can still get a big deal. I expect that this might be the new types of class as well.
